Home drug test kits are available for substances including amphetamines, barbiturates, cocaine, marijuana, methamphetamines, nicotine, benzodiazepines and opiates. A home drug test may be able to test for just one substance or even up to eight substances. Home drug tests are often used by parents who suspect their children of using drugs. This can be one way of sending a message to youngsters that drugs are not welcome.

These home drug tests can be bought for anywhere from $3 to $50 per kit. Another reason for administering a home drug test could be as a practice before going for an actual laboratory test for a specific purpose. If the home test indicates a positive, it is then advisable to get the test done in a proper laboratory once again before finding a solution to the matter. The major advantage is that results are obtained almost immediately. When testing at home, make sure that the sample you use, irrespective of its nature, is uncontaminated. Some home drug tests such as those involving the use of a hair sample may require you to send in the sample to a laboratory by mail or some other similar method.

Many experts contend that home drug tests may not be the right way to determine if youngsters are involved in substance abuse. This is because there is a very high possibility that these tests might give out a “false negative” or a “false positive” frequently. This can lead to misunderstandings particularly if an innocent youngster gets a “false positive”. Such confusions will only cause tension at home and lead to strained relationships.
